Description

This stately, well-maintained country house is located in one of Hilversum’s most beautiful residential areas, close to the international school. The house is hidden from view from the street and directly borders on the beautiful “Hoorneboegse Heide”. An ideal family home, with a spacious plot covering almost 8000 m2 that merges seamlessly with the expansive “Het Goois” nature reserve.

In the 1920s, architect Johan Melchior van der Mey was commissioned to design a “country house with a garage and gardener's lodge” at this fantastic location. Van der Mey (1915-1940) was an architect of the Amsterdam School and gained fame with his design for the Scheepvaarthuis (‘Maritime House’) in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam School style is particularly recognisable by the decorative facades adorned with beautiful, at times exuberant brickwork. Striking accents in playful relief were added to doors, communal doorways and corners.
Over the years, the house has been modified several times to meet changing demands, yet its distinctive character has always been preserved. It has been thoroughly, yet respectfully modernised, with the aim of achieving the highest level of comfort without compromises. On entering the house today, you are immediately struck by the ample dimensions, the intimacy, the unique incidence of light and the beautiful architectural sightlines, so that from various points you have a view across almost the entire ground floor.

The effect is all the more impressive because the house looks rather subdued from the street. The exterior gives little clue of what is revealed behind the facade. The hallway is as you would expect in a house of this standard – impressive, with a magnificent staircase. The floor consists of marble tiles in the classic black-and-white chequered pattern. From the hallway, double doors provide access to the library/’gentlemen’s room’ with fireplace, and to the convivial living room, again with fireplace and semi-circular bay window. Adjacent is the truly spacious kitchen, offering everything a culinary enthusiast could desire.
French doors open onto the raised stone patio, which extends across the entire width of the house. The patio benefits from extensive views over the extremely large, private backyard and the forest edge. A private forest path leads to the house’s own gate onto the Hoorneboegse Heide. Where there used to be a greenhouse in the original design, an indoor swimming pool was created thereafter, which was subsequently transformed into a highly functional office space (currently used as a TV room and gym) with its own entrance. If it were desired, the former swimming pool could be restored to its original condition. The charming walled vegetable garden at the front of the house is still there but is now more of an ornamental garden.
On the first floor of the villa there are three spacious bedrooms, a beautiful bathroom and a separate suite containing the comfortable master bedroom, a second bathroom and a separate dressing room. On the second floor there are another two bedrooms and a third bathroom. There is plenty of light everywhere, thanks to the skylight in the ridge of the roof above the stairwell.

The former coach-house, featuring wide overhangs and French doors to the walled garden, is suitable for independent use as a separate dwelling. It has a modest kitchen and a spacious living room with a large bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. Ideal for use by grandparents, au pair or as a guesthouse.
